Mentor Ohana - Career & Vocational Teen Mentoring
Career & Vocational Teen Mentoring

Mentor Ohana presents the Career & Vocational Teen Mentoring (CVTM) program

Available to everyone aged 12 - 17 years old

This exciting program teaches valuable life skills through a fun after school program that takes participants on field trips each week to local business to learn what it takes to start, run and work at businesses in their interest area. This program directly addresses the critical youth risk factor of "low connection with community" prevalent here on Kauai.

Our model is to work in mentor "pods" that are comprised of four adult mentors and 5 - 8 teen participants.

This program has three tracks:

Media Technology: Teens create 5 - 10 minute radio shows participating in script writing, reading, public speaking, computer software, creative problem solving and learning other self esteem-building skills.

Healthcare Careers: Participants work with visiting healthcare professionals at school and on location at medical clinics, hospitals, spas, government agencies and other business sites.

Small Business: Teens select which businesses they would like to learn about and then work with their mentor pod to develop questions to ask when they go and visit businesses on alternating days. Sessions at school will focus on life skills ranging from filling in job applications to managing a bank account.

Participants - both teens and mentors - sign a two month contract to participate in this program which provides all transportation from school, to business locations, and then home. At the end of the contract period, those who remain to the conclusion get to participate in the group fundraising effort upon which they will work together to generate and profit and loss statement of their project and divide the profits amongst themselves.
